Research shows that effective investigation of crimes involving sexual violence requires officers that possess a unique set of knowledge, skills and abilities. Yet, officers often receive minimal training on how to respond to these cases.
Victim dissatisfaction and lack of participation are direct consequences of failing to specifically train officers on responding to these crimes. Officers need to know the current realities of sexual violence perpetration, have the skills to establish rapport with traumatized victims and the ability to gather sufficient evidence to hold perpetrators accountable. As part of its mission, Cleveland Rape Crisis Center is dedicated to bringing law enforcement agencies this training incorporating the most current national best practices related to investigation of sexual violence incidents.
Dan Clark, former Chief of Police for the City of Lakewood and current Director of Professional Training at Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, can design a training to meet the needs of your organization. He travels the country as a faculty member for the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Violence Against Women Institute, and trains local and state agencies.
