Teachers and school administrators play a primary role in identifying, responding and preventing sexual assault and abuse. Cleveland Rape Crisis Center offers two trainings to help educators understand sexual behavior, what is appropriate and not, and what you can and should do to intervene.
Stewards of Children: Adults’ Responsibility to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse (3 hours)
Stewards of Children is a revolutionary, evidence-based sexual abuse prevention training program, developed by Darkness to Light, that educates adults to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse and motivates them to courageous action. The training is applicable for any adult, but is particularly designed for organizations that serve children and youth. After training participants will:
- Understand the facts of child sexual abuse – incidence rates and effects on individuals and society
- Understand how child sexual abuse happens
- Understand that adults are responsible for the protection of children
- Understand the importance of screening staff/volunteers who work with children and adolescents
- Understand the importance of a well conceived one-adult/one-child policy
- Have resources to react responsibly to incidents of child sexual abuse
- Understand the proactive role youth-serving organizations need to take to protect children and educate their communities about child sexual abuse
Responding Appropriately to Sexualized Behavior in the K-12 Classroom (3 hours)
This workshop is designed to help teachers and school administrators reduce or eliminate feelings of frustration – and sometimes shock – over situations involving child sexual behavior. Participants will also learn:
- how to identify and distinguish normal and problematic sexual behaviors that may be verbal, physical or facilitated using technology (sexting, Facebook, MySpace, etc.)
- which behaviors must be reported to administrators, parents, police, and the Department of Children & Family Services and which do not.
- appropriate intervention tactics and techniques
- elements of effective, enforceable classroom and school policies regarding sexual behavior.
Both trainings can be hosted at your school and are appropriate for administrators, teachers and other school personnel. The cost per training is $400 for up to 20 people and discounts are available for multiple presentations.
