More than half a million dollars will help promote awareness and prevention of sexual assault and dating violence among teenagers in the Lakewood City School District. The U.S. Department of Justice awarded the grant to the district and its partners through the Supporting Teens through Education and Protection (STEP) Program.
Lakewood City Schools has partnered with the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, Lakewood Police Department, and Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy Center in the project. The $511,832 grant will be used during a three year period to develop and implement a comprehensive plan to prevent violence.
“Way too many middle and high school students are being harmed, not by strangers, but by people they know, trust and even love. By talking openly about teen dating violence and sexual assault in the Lakewood schools and community, we will give students the tools to recognize abuse and the safe space to come forward and ask for help when they need it,” said Megan O'Bryan, President and CEO of Cleveland Rape Crisis Center.
