Then in November, Jerry Sandusky, a former defensive coordinator for the Penn State University football team, was charged with sexually abusing young boys.
Men started calling again.
And no one at the center was surprised.
Research shows that one in six boys are sexually abused before their 18th birthday. And about 3 percent of men -- one in 33 -- have been raped or experienced an attempted rape, according to the center.
There weren't dozens of men who called the rape crisis center hot line after Sandusky's arrest. But there were so many more than usually called that counselors knew it was time to restart a support group for men.
That group will hold its first meeting Wednesday, Jan. 25.
Kirsti Mouncey, the center's vice president of client and clinical services and a licensed therapist, will lead the group along with a male facilitator. In addition, the center will provide a safe place for men to talk about how rape, incest and other sex crimes have changed their lives.
The goal is to help them heal.
