CRCC Applauds New Sex Ed Guidelines

Cleveland Rape Crisis Center (CRCC) enthusiastically supports the groundbreaking, new sex education guidelines which have just been released by the Future of Sex Education (FoSE) initiative. Recommending these guidelines to educators across the country is a critical first step to helping children lead safer, healthier lives.
“It’s important for children to know they have a right not to be touched. It’s important for teens to recognize unhealthy dating behaviors and relationships so they can make healthy choices. It’s important for everyone to understand survivors of sexual assault are not at fault. The person who committed the crime is at fault,” said Megan O’Bryan, CRCC President and CEO. “All of these topics are addressed in the new guidelines.”
National Sexuality Education Standards: Core Content and Skills, K-12 represents a big shift in thinking. It acknowledges the importance of these issues, not only to a student’s safety, but also to overall well-being and academic success.
“When we educate children at a young age about what is appropriate, where to go for help, and that sexual abuse or assault is not their fault, then we can prevent the years of suffering in silence like we’ve seen with the tragedies at Penn State and Syracuse University,” added O’Bryan. “When we discourage open discussion and education in favor of secrecy, we allow crimes to continually be perpetrated in secrecy.”
CRCC provides educational programs for students of all ages. Through the programming, CRCC reaches more than 12,000 students each year in local schools and colleges.
