Cleveland Statistics on Sexual Assault

  • 1,366 Sexual assault and child endangerment cases were reported to Cleveland Police (Cuyahoga County Sexual Assault Response Team, 2009)

  • Approximately 600 sexual assault cases were seen at reporting hospitals in Cuyahoga County (Cuyahoga County Sexual Assault Response Team, 2009)

  • Cleveland Rape Crisis Center receives about 3,000 calls per year on its 24-hour crisis hotline

  • The 2007 Core Services Report from United Way of Greater Cleveland indicated that an estimated 11% of the population of Cuyahoga County (or 149,274 people) have been raped some time in their lives and are in need of healing services

 

National Statistics on Sexual Assault (from www.RAINN.org)

  • 1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime (14.8% completed rape; 2.8% attempted rape).1

  • 17.7 million American women have been victims of attempted or completed rape.1

  • 9 of every 10 rape victims were female in 2003.2

  • 60% of rapes/sexual assaults are not reported to the police, according to a statistical average of the past 5 years.
