CLEVELAND STATISTICS ON SEXUAL ASSAULT

  • 1,600 sex crime reports and an additional 1,100 referrals from the Department of Family and Children Services were received by the Cleveland Sex Crimes/Child Abuse Unit *
  • County Prosecutor's Major Trial Unit prosecuted 767 rape and homicide cases. Nearly 50% (393) were sexual assault cases and only 100 of them were tried in court.
  • Hillcrest SANE Unit treated 47 patients for sexual assault
  • Fairview SANE Unit treated 67 patients for sexual assault
  • Bedford SANE Unit treated 28 patients for sexual assault (closed 12/04)
  • Cleveland Rape Crisis Center's 24-hour hotline received 2,300 calls

NATIONAL STATISTICS ON SEXUAL ASSAULT

  • 1 in 3 women is sexually assaulted *
  • 1 in 6 men is sexually assaulted
  • Less than 5% of sexual assaults reported to the police are false (FBI)
  • 61% of sexual assaults are not reported to the police
  • In 80% of rape cases, the victim knew the perpetrator
  • 90% of acquaintance rapes involve alcohol
  • 80% of first time violent sexual offenders commit the same crimes again once released from prison
  • 31.5% of adult women who are raped are physically injured, but 35.6% of the injured receive medical care
  • Each year, 25,000 women become pregnant following an act of sexual violence
  • $87,000 per year per criminal victimization is the cost of sexual violence , excluding child sexual assault ($5,100 is cost to victim)
  • Many long-lasting conditions result from rape: chronic pelvic pain, gastrointestinal disorders, chronic headaches, back pain, facial pain, depression, and anxiety disorders
  • 50% likelihood that a woman will develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after being raped
