Claire's Story
Cleveland - Trauma Services Coordinator
You can see it in her eyes and her warm, bright smile. Claire Campbell is a healer. She lives her life based on the core principles of helping herself not to suffer and helping others not to suffer. So it’s no surprise she chose therapy as her life’s work. “I want to help people understand that no matter what they are going through, they don’t have to do it alone,” says Campbell.
As Child and Family Trauma Services Coordinator and Wellness Advocate for Cleveland Rape Crisis Center (CRCC), Claire spends her time with survivors and their families as they work through the effects of sexual violence.
“When I can witness a family evolve from being terrified and overwhelmed when they first come to us, to opening up, feeling safe and being confident in their ability to move forward… I just feel grateful to be a part of the process,” Claire adds.
Through different programs like Camp Create, Girls Kick Butt and individual and group therapy, Claire presents children and adults with many different coping techniques.
“Part of my mission is to help people realize they have the answers inside themselves. We just want to help them find those answers and provide them with tools to take care of themselves,” Claire explains. Those tools may include yoga, breathing, painting, journaling or mindfulness exercises. Claire stresses the sooner survivors begin the work, the better.
“When we are able to intervene early, letting a person know they have support and someone who believes them, that person has a better chance of moving through the trauma into a full, rich life,” says Claire, who finds peace by helping survivors trade their suffering for smiles. “We cannot change the past, but we can provide survivors with the tools to shape their future.”
